SUMMER SOLSTICE
The Summer Solstice was designed by Bradley and Judy Niemeyer. These instructions teach a strip piecing technique that expands on our traditional foundation paper piecing approach to complete lone star units. Strips are sewn onto foundation paper to complete what we call a ‘Strip Set’. After the strip sets are completed, they are cut apart, rearranged, and resewn into a diamond star point. The technique evolved from seeing some common assembly approaches between the Summer Solstice and Bali Fever Backgrounds. Judy began experimenting with ways to speed up the creation of a lone star block with a strip to eliminate cutting, while also minimizing fabric waste.
The Summer Solstice star was designed using 3” strips for the strip piecing. It incorporates a paper pieced New York Beauty (NYB) block and the general assembly process was designed with no Y-Seams. It uses yardage very efficiently at just over 7 yards of fabric for the top.
SUMMER SOLSTICE QUEEN
The Summer Solstice Queen pattern is a long awaited publication from Quiltworx, expanding the Summer Solstice pattern, a customer favorite, to a Queen size layout. To accomplish this, a few changes had to be made to the pattern. In addition, some updated techniques were incorporated into this design to increase yardage efficiency, time efficiency, and organization. Through these updates, we have designed a great pattern, although not compatible with the original design. As a result, if you are hoping to use this queen pattern to expand the original quilt, we recommend just remaking the center and New York Beauty units using the new papers. During assembly, you will be very glad that you did!
SUNDIAL
The Sundial foundation papers and strip piecing processes were designed by Judel and Bradley Niemeyer, both designers and developers for Quiltworx.com in 2018. This technique was designed to utilized strips in a fast, fun project that creates a dazzling 12 point medallion, reminding us of a Sundial. The quilt top is a great project for beginners, intermediate and advanced students, with all straight lined foundation strip piecing, and some very gradually curved piecing required for final assembly. It is compatible with Quiltworx 48-piece 2-1/2” strip sets and can also be expanded using Quiltworx On-Point Expansion packages, which would bring this design to 99” square.
DESERT SKY
Bradley and Judy Niemeyer designed the foundation pieces and layout for Desert Sky. As one of our most popular patterns for beginners, the Desert Sky is routinely updated to match current fabric collections on the market. The cover samples for this re-release of the pattern were designed by Judel Niemeyer in Quiltster with Expressions Batiks from Riley Blake Designs. A sewing technique called foundation paper piecing is used when sewing the pieces onto the foundation units. Curved piecing and traditional piecing are required to join the units after the foundation piecing is completed.

RAINBOW CRYSTAL
The Rainbow Crystal foundation papers and strip piecing processes were designed by Quiltworx. There are no Y-seams or curved piecing, so it is a relatively straightforward quilt pattern that would work well for a beginner to intermediate quilter. The quilt uses 2-1/2” strips and the cover design was created with the Prismatic Strip Set designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer, manufactured by Timeless Treasures.
